How This Manual is Organized

This manual describes how to install and use your Gigabit Ethernet Controller in a Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP/Server 2003, Windows NT, Novell NetWare®, and Linux® operating environment. The procedures in this manual assume that you are a system or network administrator experienced in installing similar hardware.

This manual is organized as follows:

Introductiondescribes the features of the Gigabit Ethernet Controller. This chapter also describes the adapter faceplate and LED indicators.

Installing the Hardwarelists the hardware and software requirements for adapter installation and use, and provides instructions to physically install the controller in your system.

Installing the Softwareprovides a link to each software supported by the Gigabit Ethernet Controller.

Windows 2000 Driver Software explains how to install the Gigabit Ethernet Controller software under Microsoft Windows 2000.

Windows NT Driver Software explains how to install the Gigabit Ethernet Controller software under Microsoft Windows NT.

Windows XP/Server 2003 Driver Software explains how to install the Gigabit Ethernet Controller software under Microsoft Windows XP/Server 2003.

NetWare Driver Software explains how to install the Gigabit Ethernet Controller software under Novell NetWare.

Linux Driver Software describes the Linux driver for the Gigabit Ethernet Controller, including its limitations, packaging, installation, and module parameters.

Broadcom Boot Agent Driver Software describes the Multi-Boot Agent driver for the Gigabit Ethernet Controller, including its client and server setups.

Key Protocols and Interfaces provides an overview of Controller Teaming, Failover Teaming, and VLAN configuration.

Typographic Conventions

The following table describes the typographic styles used in this manual.

Typeface or Symbol Meaning Example
AaBbCc123 This type is used for names of commands, files, and directories used within the text. View the readme.txt file.
It also depicts on-screen computer output and prompts. Main#
AaBbCc123 This bold type appears in command examples. It shows text that must be typed in exactly as shown. Main# sys
AaBbCc123 This italic type appears in command examples as a parameter place holder. Replace the indicated text with the appropriate real name or value when using the command. To establish a Telnet session, enter:
host# telnet IP-address
This also shows book titles, special terms, or words to be emphasized. Read the User Guide thoroughly.
[   ] Command items shown inside brackets are optional and can be used or excluded as the situation demands. Do not type the brackets. host# ls [-a]
