Using unsupported RAW images in HDRtist Pro

Getting a brand new Digital camera is exciting, however the RAW image format sometimes may not be supported by Apple's RAW decoder which means that either the image comes out seriously wrong or it doesn't come out at all. Not to worry as there's other things to try.

Method #1

The first is the easiest and that's to try converting your RAW image to an Adobe DNG image. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it's great.

You can download the FREE Adobe DNG convertor from the following link http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/16064/adobe-dng-converter

Method #2

Method 2 uses the RAW conversion software that comes with your camera. If you haven't already installed it, I'd suggest checking out the manufactures website as it'll most likely have a newer version of the software than what came with your camera. Once you're RAW conversion software is installed and you've understood how to use it, you're ready to go.

  1. Open up your RAW image and calibrate the settings so that you're happy with the image, then save a copy and name it something like "myImage_normal.jpeg"
  2. Now use the EV controls to adjust the exposure to -2 and save another copy of the image. This time name it something like "myImage_Dark.jpeg"
  3. Lastly, drag the EV controls up so that the exposure is set to +2 and save the last copy of the image. The file should be named like "myImage_Bright.jpeg"
  4. Now import all 3 images into HDRtist Pro.
