NoteCards various preferences are explained below as they appear in the preferences window (in the NoteCard menu).

General
- Sheet Folder. The folder where sheets are searched for.
- Reader Font. The default font when plain text cards are opened in Reader.
- Background. The optional image will be drawn over the desktop if the "Hide the Desktop" option is checked.
- Show/Hide like Dashboard. When you click on the desktop or other applications NoteCard will quickly fade away like Dashboard. Optionally you can set the activation hot key with the field next to the check box.
- Hide the Desktop. A image of your choice will be drawn over the desktop for a cleaner look.
- Place over Desktop. When NoteCard is not active it will be drawn over the desktop but behind the icons.
- Hide in Exposé/Spaces. If checked the NoteCard window (which is the size of your screen) will not appear when using Exposé or Spaces.
- Automatically check for updates. NoteCard will automatically check for updates periodically and install them. You can also check for updates when ever you want by choosing the Check for Update... item in the NoteCard menu.
Cards
- Title Font. The font used to draw card titles.
- Default Font. The default font for new rich text cards and the static font for plain text cards.
- Random new card color. When new cards are created a random color will be chosen instead of the default color.
- Snap to grid. While moving or resizing cards they will snap to a 32x32 pixel grid.
- Opacity. Changes the opacity of all cards and default opacity for new cards.
- Transition. Choose from 9 effects to display for card transitions.
- Close tabs when unfocused. If you select another card or tab the currently focused tab will be closed automatically (only allowing open tab on screen at any time).
- Tab Font. The font used when display cards as tabs (on screen edges).
Sheets
- Sheet Size. The size of the sheet thumbnail images in the sheet browser.
- Sheet Location. The location of the sheet browser on your monitor. By default NoteCard will show the browser on the left side but any other side can be chosen instead.
- Sheet Offset. The offset of the sheet browser from the edge of the screen (depending on the location). This is used to prevent NoteCard from blocking other programs.
